sustainble life

fletno trajnostno / nifty & sustainable

But what do we do for a better tomorrow? Today, when literally everything is labeled as green, eco, bio, sustainable, socialy responsible, something-friendly…we should really ask ourselves, how much do we actually care?

Nowadays, we will all have to quickly catch the balance between our lifestyles and the modest survival wishes of planet Earth. Textbooks give various definitions of sustainability, in the broadest sense saying, that it refers to the ability to maintain a process continuously over time. In contrast, the business context says sustainability seeks to prevent the depletion of natural or physical resources so that they will remain available for the next generations.

In order for us to live more sustainably, we don’t have to turn our lives upside down, we just have to take little actions day by day, and encourage others around us, to do the same. Couple of advices down below are just a drop in the sea, but you know, many a little makes a mickle.

  • Uporabimo to, kar že imamo / Use what is already there

Moja, 10+ let stara (in prav nič trendi) vetrovka še vedno kar dobro drži nalive.

There is no need to let ourselves over to kooky consumerism and spend hardly earned money. Use clothes for their purpose, not their looks, eat what grows on the garden, not what is put on a supermarket shelves, think with your own head. My 10+ years old (and not fashionable) rain jacket still holds downpours.

Manj izgovorov. Več akcije. Vsak dan.
  • Dobro (po)skrbimo za svojo opremo / Take a good care of your equipment

Torn shoelaces don’t mean the shoes should be thrown away. Paying a visit to the cobbler or tailor is actually a way to keep small businesses alive.

  • Raziskujmo, preučujmo in analizirajmo / Analyse and research

But when it is finally time to switch up gear, not only price, but also the production line should be taken into consideration. Cheap can be good and vice versa, but not necessarily high price secures high quality. Buying eco shampoo from a company that gives zero attention to the environmental standards, seems very counterproductive. Every conscious company have CSR (corporate social responsibility) document, where all aspects of their sustainable actions are explained.

  • Popotniške stvari uporabljajmo tudi doma / Traveling goods are often very usable at home too

Why would we take reusable water bottles, collapsible straws and other utensils, bamboo cups and pots, solid shampoos and washing detergents, etc…, only when we go traveling? All this is also usable at home and every little action counts when it comes to reducing waste.

  • Reciklirani materiali in ”fair trade” certifikati / Recycled materials and ”fair trade” certificates

Fast ”instant” fashion is cheap and easily accessible, but not so great considering from the environmental point of view, namely production of one pair of jeans can consume up to 20.000!!! litres of water, therefore spend a bit more for better quality and longer-lasting clothes, that are not made by young children.

  • Telefon, podaljšek naših možganov / Cellphone, extension of our brains

Papir so drevesa. Drevesa so življenje.

And let’s use it for all the annoying daily tasks, that we are never excited to do. Everything, that does not need to be put on paper, has only short shelf date and no emotional value to us, should stay in digital form. Paper equals trees, and trees are life. Literally.

  • Manj pakiranja, manj kompliciranja / Less packing, less confusion

Pure truth. And not only we feel better with less things, also planet Earth appreciates less clutter. Things we do not need anymore can find place in a second-hand stores, some can be given away, refurbished, repurposed, etc… There are many options.

  • Življenjski cilji / Life goals

If nothing else, being responsible is sort of a trend at the moment. Lifestyle change is not easy and demands lots of adjustments and renunciations, but long-term results are too good not to do it, therefore let’s make recycling, reusing, repurposing, self-sufficiency, common sense, and compassion, part of our daily routine.
